IT & Digital Recruitment Consultant, Callum Stainer, shares his career journey from retail to recruitment.
Retail and Recruitment… Two very opposing industries which contribute to my ongoing career journey.
When I first started college aged 17, I applied for a job at Morrisons thinking it would be a fantastic opportunity to earn a bit of pocket money and gain some important work experience. I would have laughed if someone had told me that seven years and a degree later, I’d still be there and loving my job.
I can’t begin to explain the positive impact retail has had on not only my career but also on me as a person. It taught me countless life lessons which have made me an extremely grounded individual. I experienced first-hand the way in which a small proportion of the public perceives and looks down on retail workers, but they couldn’t be any more wrong!
After finishing my degree and moving into a senior management position within Morrisons, I found myself at a crossroads. Did I want to be a Store Manager at this point in my life? Not particularly. Did I feel like I achieved all that I wanted to at Morrisons? Absolutely.
I did love my job, but this crossroads in my time at Morrisons made me question my next steps and where I wanted to be in five years’ time. I really enjoyed my recruitment projects I managed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and this lit the fire in my belly for recruitment.
Fast-forward to today, I have worked in IT & Digital recruitment for three months now and have loved every minute of it. I must admit though, people aren’t wrong when they say it’s an emotional rollercoaster! Having a consistent work pattern has also supported me in my life outside of work. I have resumed regular exercise, feel healthier and started playing football again.
To put it in a nutshell, even though it was a big decision to leave Morrisons after 7 years, I feel like I’ve made the right decision and I look forward to the future with Greenfield IT!
