Top 5 tips for Graduates looking to break into IT

Introduction

As an IT recruitment consultant with experience in the industry and working with graduates, I have seen first-hand the challenges that graduates face when trying to break into this sector. However, with a bit of know-how and persistence, it is definitely possible to land your dream entry-level role in IT, especially if you follow my tips for graduates!

Here are some tips for you newly graduates:

  1. Network, network, network. Building a network of contacts within the industry is one of the most important things you can do when trying to break into the IT field. Attend industry events, join professional organisations, and reach out to people in the field to learn more about the industry and make connections.
  2. Get the right education. While having a degree in computer science or a related field can certainly be helpful, it is not always necessary. However, it is important to have a strong understanding of the basics of computer science, programming, and data structures. Consider taking online courses or earning a certification to demonstrate your knowledge and skills.
  3. Build a portfolio. Many companies prefer to see a candidate’s work before hiring them. Creating a portfolio of your work (e.g. websites, apps, etc.) can help you stand out from the competition.
  4. Be open to entry-level positions. Remember that entry-level positions are often a stepping stone to more senior roles. Be willing to take on an entry-level position and work your way up.
  5. Be persistent. Breaking into the IT industry can be a challenging process, but it is not impossible. Keep applying to jobs and don’t give up.
